Hey Choir Nerds!
I’m super stoked to announce that I’ll be performing as a backup singer with the amazing Ben Folds again!
Here’s the deal: Ben is really supportive of local orchestras and he uses these concerts to encourage communities to bolster support for these organizations, many of which are struggling to stay alive. He pays, from his own pocket, to have his songs expertly orchestrated by a big-time arranger so that he can play an entire concert backed by the symphony. And I’m not talking about a little string quartet tucked away upstage left, folks. It’s the FULL orchestra! He tours with his drummer and his vocal director, Kerry Marsh.
Kerry is a killer vocal jazz arranger and singer, and if you’re not familiar with his work, you’re missing out! He and Ben connected while working together on Ben’s show The Sing Off and thereafter, Ben asked Kerry to help him write 4-part choral arrangements that would work with the orchestrations, and assemble local-ish singers (usually 8 voices) to make up the choir.
Pretty awesome, right???
Two years ago I had a blast singing background vocals for Ben when he performed with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. So I’m really excited to do it again, but this time in Kansas City…for two gigs on June 10 & 11. There are some new charts on this gig, and the vocal group will be completely different than the St. Louis ensemble, so I’m really looking forward to it.
I hope to see you there!
Pictured below, with Ben and me, is my good friend John Stafford. John directs choir and VJ at Kansas City Kansas Community College, and he’s the one who got me on the list for the Folds gig. Thanks, John! And CONGRATS on your wedding last weekend, bro!
